Vogue Café

I've now been to the Vogue Cafe twice, which I think is a firm advocation of its loveliness! Nestled in the basement of the Printemps department store, near Opera or Havre-Caumartin metro, this little cafe is only a temporary pop-up - but I highly recommend that you get yourself along there before it closes in March.

C'est la deuxième fois que je suis allée au "Vogue Café", qui est un peu une indication de son charme. Il est niché au sous-sol de Printemps, près du métro Opéra ou Havre-Caumartin. Ce petit café n'est qu'un "pop-up" temporaire - comme un "magasin éphémère", mais je recommande fortement que vous y allez avant qu'il ferme en mars !

Following suit after the Vogue cafes already in Dubai and Moscow, the patisserie house of Hugo & Victor provides the sweet treats, whilst the Vogue team has taken care of the decor, creating a calming, breezy 50's vibe. Apparently it resembles the personal apartment of one of Vogue's editors...but I've forgotten which one!

Suite à l'ouverture des cafés Vogue à Dubai et à Moscou, la maison de pâtisserie "Hugo & Victor" fournisse les sucrés, tandis que l'équipe Vogue a choisi le décor, en créant un atmosphère désinvolte inspiré des années 50. Apparemment il ressemble l'appartement personnel d'un des éditeurs du magazine Vogue...mais j'ai oublié lequel !

We had a little bit of trouble locating the cafe inside the vast department store, which spans two buildings - and the staff did not seem to be very helpful, as the few that we asked hadn't even heard of the cafe. Good work.

On a eu un peu de mal à trouver le café dans le magasin vaste de Printemps qui compte deux bâtiments - les vendeurs n'étaient pas très serviables, et quand on a demandé où se trouvait le café quelques vendeurs ne savaient pas qu'il existait. Bon...!

Once you've found it, sink into a comfy sofa whilst you wait for a table to free up (it's popular, but with good reason). Whilst you wait, you can admire the decor, browse the menu or flick through the copies of Vogue magazine which are scattered around the cafe.

Une fois que vous l'avez trouvé, on peut s'enfoncer dans un sofa en attendant pour une table (c'est très populaire, mais pour raison !) Tandis que vous attendez, vous pouvez admirer le décor, jeter un oeil sur le menu ou feuilleter les copies de Vogue qui sont placées partout sur les tables.

The menu is not the cheapest, but I recommend getting a coffee for around €5.00 and a cheaper pastry instead of a €7.00 pâtisserie. The 'escargot praline' was my favourite, and you get a LOT of pastry for your €3.50! Macarons sell at €2.00, and lunches are anywhere up to €20.00.

Le menu est un peu cher, mais je recommande les cafés pour environ €5.00 et un viennoiserie (comme l'escargot praliné) mois cher au lieu d'une pâtisserie pour €7.00. Les macarons sont à €2.00 la pièce et un déjeuner serait environ €20.00.

My favourite thing about the cafe is the atmosphere. The decor is lovely, the staff are smiley and helpful (a rarity for Paris!), and they don't rush you despite the cafe's busyness. You really do feel like you are in the plush reception of the Vogue headquarters, and this atmosphere is only encouraged by the gorgeous clientele - mainly beautifully dressed Vogue fans who have flocked to try their fashion-bible's latest hotspot.

Ce que j'aime le plus c'est l'atmosphère. Le décor est vraiment beau, les serviteurs sont accueillants et serviables (pas toujours le cas à Paris !) et ils vous laissent pour prendre votre temps :)

Au revoir Londres

The final day took us on an eclectic tour of some London districts which couldn't be more different in personality. The first stop: the thriving sub-culture of Camden Town where the streets are populated with punks and goths and the streets are lined with tattoo parlours, thrift stores and shops selling shisha pipes. 

My friend tasted her first meal of fish and chips at Poppies, a pleasingly retro diner which has apparently been voted the best in the UK. Be that as it may, but I think nothing beats fish & chips mingled with salty sea air on a blustery beach on the UK coastline :) 

After a brief and unremarkable stop-off at Abbey Road, the famous recording studio whose pedestrian crossing lent itself to the iconic Beatles' album cover, we made a swift return to 221b Baker Street. I don't think our attempt was quite as impressive... 

Yeah...

The Sherlock Holmes Museum was great! It's about £6.00 for a ticket and once inside, you explore 8 rooms which have been re-created from Sir. Arthur Conan Doyle's descriptions of the detective lad pad. For real Sherlock fans, they are filled with objects from the stories, cameos, knick-nacks and upstairs are uncanny wax-models of characters from the books.

My favourite part was the deer-stalker hats, the bowler hats, the pipes and the magnifying glasses that are hidden around so that you can pretend to be Dr. Watson and Sherlock Holmes in every room.

London By Night

At night in London, there is nothing better you can do on a warm evening than to stroll along by the Thames, on the South Bank of the river.

La nuit à Londres, il n'y a rien de mieux à faire pendant une soirée agréable que de faire une promenade au bord de la Tamise, surtout sur la rive dit "Sud" du fleuve. 

My favourite stretch is from Waterloo station to London Bridge station - which takes in the imposing Brutalist architecture exemplified in the great concrete slabs which form the Hayward Gallery and The British Film Institute, as well as the Undercroft skate-park, where you can watch youngsters performing impressive tricks on their skateboards and BMX bikes.

Ma portion du  promenade préférée se trouve entre la gare de Waterloo et celle de London Bridge, où on peut voir l'architecture fameuse "Brutaliste": des grand blocs en béton  qui forment les murs de "The Hayward Gallery" et "The British Film Institute", aussi que le skate où on peut regarder les jeunes qui font des figures de skate impressionnantes.  

There are a couple of really nice restaurants, and break-taking views of St. Paul's and some of London's most iconic bridges. On warm nights, expect your senses to be pricked by the sound of buskers, and the smell wafting from street-vendors' trucks who sell delicious fast-food to be eaten messily from a napkin - perfect fuel for your meandering.

Il y a plusieurs restos très sympas, et des panoramas à couper le souffle de St. Paul et quelques ponts les plus iconiques à Londres. Pendant les soirées estivales, on peut attendre les sons des musiciens des rues et les odeurs délicieux de la nourriture vendue dans la rue à manger en marchant. 

But do not be fooled into thinking that that is all there is to see at night. Some monuments are most beautiful when lit up in the dark, like Buckingham Palace  which we saw just after twilight.

Ne pensez-vous pas que le rive "sud" est la seule chose à voir pendant le soir ! Plusieurs monuments sont plus beaux quand ils sont illuminés pendant la nuit, comme Buckingham Palace.

For a romantic stroll in a part of London little spoken about, take the tube to Maida Vale and explore 'Little Venice', so-called because of its famous canals.

Pour une promenade plutôt romantique, il y a un quartier moins touristique qui est surnommé "Le Petit Venise" à l'arrêt de Maida Vale sur "the tube", ainsi-nommée par Lord Byron (d'après une histoire) à cause des canaux. 

Boats glitter on the water: either house-boats or restaurants on the water and beautiful grand old houses line the canal-side. 

There are a couple of really cool looking pubs to check out, especially 'The Bridge House'.

If mysteries, fog, shady-dealings and darkened passage-ways sound like your idea of fun, head either to The Clink Museum or The London Dungeons at London Bridge for grisly tales, or if that sounds a little too scary - to the home of everyone's favourite detective and his trusty companion: Mr. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson.

Si vous aimez les mystères, le brouillard, les affaires louches et les ruelles sombres, vous aimerez "The Clink Museum" ou "The London Dungeons" à London Bridge pour découvrir des macabres histoires de Londres, ou, si cela vous semblez un peu effrayant, allez chez M. Sherlock Holmes et Dr. Watson, le fameux détective Victorien. 

We were so intrigued that we decided to come back to the Museum at 221b Baker Street the next day! 

 But that's for another time...

There's Nowhere Else like London

Let's continue on the London trip! Our next stop was China Town & Soho, near Leicester Sq. We wandered around under the gently swaying red lanterns, cheerfully brightening up grey skies & took in the delicious smells wafting out from all-you-can-eat Chinese buffets.

On continue sur notre voyage à Londres ! Notre prochain arrêt était China Town et Soho, pas très loin de Leicester Sq. Nous avons erré au-dessous des lanternes vénitiennes qui se balançaient doucement, en donnant un peu de joie aux ciels gris de Londres. Il y avait aussi des odeurs délicieuses qui flottaient des restos-buffets à volonté chinois.

Continuing into Soho & Theatre-land, we soon found ourselves where The Beatles played their last concert on Savile Row, walking down Jermyn St and through the beautiful arcades towards Oxford and Regent's St. Don't forget to check out Canarby St, where my favourite shop is Liberty London, and Fortnum & Mason on Jermyn St., where you can see beautifully packaged, truly British, deliciously enticing food: not to mention sales-people in tailcoats!

En continuent envers Soho et Theatre-land, nous nous sommes retrouvées dans la rue de Savile Row où The Beatles ont joué leur dernier concert d'un balcon, puis près de Jermyn St., et à travers des galeries marchandes à Oxford St et Regent's St. N'oubliez pas Carnaby Street, où se trouve mon magasin préféré de Liberty London, et aussi Fortum & Mason sur  Jermyn St., où on peut acheter des alimentations délicieux traditionnellement britanniques dans des emballages beaux: sans mentionner les vendeurs portant des queues-de-pie.
